10th March

Today at the shop... It’s beginning to look as if the season of sad looking fruit and veg might be nearing its end with the arrival of some great looking spinach and purple-sprouting broccoli. Get them while they’re fresh because they might be harder to find on next Friday’s maket run. However, for all who enjoyed the tasty ‘Fair Trade’ organic bananas, the good news is that our supplier is going to continue trying to get them in future. You keep demanding quality, we’ll keep providing it.

friday.Today at the shop

Friday at the shop... I edited all the gunk codes out of my blog but then managed wipe-out the photos of the Market I was trying to past up. This technical problem should be resolved on our trip to Manchester on Monday where Ange and I are hoping to meet up with one of the major importers of veg from the continent. It will be interesting to ask him how he sees the future for organics and locally grown produce. Does anyone have any questions for him?

10th Feb Today at the Market

Today at the market... was unremarkable with apologies from some familiar botanical friends like Caribbean sweet potatoes, romanesque, and russet apples. “That time of year” as they say.

But do not despair try this simple curry made with Celeriac and Swede. (or anything else you fancy)   I love it but if you don’t like it, don’t do it again.

2 onions, chopped
1 clove garlic, chopped
1/2 tsp black cumin seeds
1/2 tsp ajowan seeds (have we got this in the shop?)
Groundnut or sunflower oil
Celeriac and/or Swede and/or turnip, peeled and cut into fork-size pieces (you know how much you want, don't you?)
150 ml your favourite stock, or half a cube of something and 150 ml water
1/3 tsp cayenne (or more, or less, according to taste)
1 tsp garam masala
Salt

Fry the onions, garlic, cumin and ajowan seeds in a tbsp or two of oil, until golden. Meanwhile, steam the root vegetables until tender. Throw them into the pan with the onions, along with the stock, cayenne, garam masala and salt (you may not need much salt if you have used a stock cube). Cook very gently for five minutes. The vegetables will absorb stock; you may want more.

Garnish with chopped chillies, if you like.

More Organic News

Today at the shop...well the good news is that one of our main suppliers at the Manchester wholesale market has very kindly agreed to take delivery of our orders from Organic 2000 Ltd, so that we can now collect orders on our usual early morning visits. This should give our customers greater access to a very wide range of organic produce from many well established organic growers and producers.

It might be worth producing a shortened sample list of what is available and its provenance, from Organic 2000's rather long and ever changing pricelists. I'm happy to do that if Carol has enough to do at present. Get your orders in early!

BTW Could we put the web address up in the shop?
