Why local ?
Here at The Green Valley Grocer, we have always felt that a truly effective community food shop should be supplying local food to local people.
In the year since we opened, we have been encouraged by the numbers of people bringing their seasonal produce in for us to sell. We have also worked with individuals, and with Pennine Country Markets, to source locally made jams, marmalades and chutneys.
Local food means low food miles, and if it is produced in season, without the need for artificial light or heat, then its carbon footprint is minimal.
Local food tends to be grown organically, with people more interested in encouraging beneficial insects and birds to their plots than piling on the insecticides.
Local food means that we, as a community, are getting out there and growing - which has to be good for our health !
This section of the website aims to give would be growers and producers some basic guidance on what and how to produce for the shop. If you want to engage with other growers/producers, whether to pass on tips, or swap your gluts, you can do so via the Forum pages.
